Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are also often used to restore, enhance facial features and correct asymmetry by adding volume to cheeks and lips but also defining the natural contours of the jaw and chin.

Dermal Fillers Are A Naturally Occurring Substance.

Another natural part of the ageing process is that we start to loose volume in certain areas of the face, the loss in collagen also cause the skin to lose its elasticity and volume, leading to lines, hollows and sagging skin.

Dermal fillers differ from anti-wrinkle injection in that they are administered to add volume and act to can ‘plump up’ small areas such as the lips and brows and ‘re-volumise’ larger areas like the cheeks and jawline.

Dermal fillers consist of one of our skins naturally occurring sugars molecule (hyaluronic acid) which attracts and holds water assisting with skin hydration. They also restore volume by stimulating collagen production, and refresh the area by drawing water to the area.

With the correct technique and application, fillers are often used to augment features like adding cheekbones, providing definition to a chin, or contouring the shape of your lips.

The procedure itself is minimally invasive, and results can be seen immediately. There is minimal downtime, which means you can return to work the same day.

They work by filling in discrete regions such as static wrinkles that are visible when the face is at rest, deeper folds and the lips. Whereas, volumising fillers enhance or restore structure, volume and youthful contours to the larger areas of the face, cheeks and the jaw line.

Fillers are available in a variety of consistencies, with specific areas being treated with different gel consistencies depending on the patients skin types, concerns and areas of treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does dermal filler last?

  • Duration depends on many factors, such as the individual’s skin type, skin condition, lifestyle and age as well as the type and amount of product used. After the initial treatment, follow-up sessions are normally recommended around every 6 to 12 months depending on the individual and the product used.

How should I prepare for my treatment?

  • Advise your doctor and cosmetic injector if you:
  • Are taking blood thinners (such as aspirin, warfarin or clopidogrel etc)
  • Are taking fish oils
  • Using ibuprofen
  • Had recent minor dental work (e.g. scale and clean)
  • Have an auto-immune condition

What can I expect?

  • Prior to your first treatment, our doctor will consult with you to assess your suitability for dermal filler and discuss any concerns or questions you may have.
  • The procedure involves a small amount of the prescribed product being administered into the selected areas using a very fine needle, or in some instances, a cannula. The injections may sting for a few seconds, and in some instances a numbing agent will be used.

Do Dermal Fillers hurt?

  • The injections themselves feel like a slight pinch, and you may experience slight pressure or a ‘stinging’ sensation as the product is being injected. Depending on your personal pain tolerance and on the area, your practitioner may apply or inject a local anaesthetic to the to-be-treated area. Pain is such a personal and subjective thing, it all depends on your tolerance and on the treatment area.

What are the side effects?

  • Swelling at the injection site is normal. This is generally more severe when lips have been injected. Bruising is also common, which can take several days to subside.
